The origin of medals, in the 15th c. Italy, is richly displayed, as well as the origins of the first medals in Sweden in the 1560s. A central theme during the 16th and 17th c. is the role of medals as a form of propaganda in war and peace. Another section depicts how kings and statesmen have utilized medals in the service of the state.
Numerous Swedish artists have expressed themselves in the art of medals: Erik Lindberg, Carl Eldh, Carl Milles and Bror Hjorth - to name a few. We meet Arvid Karlsteen - Sweden’s first engraver of medals during the reigns of Charles XI and Charles XII, and furthermore the most prominent of all - the Swiss engraver Johann Carl Hedlinger, who worked in Sweden during 1718—1745. The exhibition is a Historia Metallica - the history of Sweden through precious metals.
