People have always treasured precious metal and have needed to protect them. Coins of gold, silver and copper, from the Roman period and the Viking Age to the 18th c., tell us about trade and cultural contacts. Many hoards are evidence of warfare, others have been hidden as a security. The enormous hoard from The Old City of Stockholm, called The Lohe Hoard, contains more than 18 000 silver coins. It was hidden c. 1741.
